Thank you so much. I see it now … I probably could have figured that out for myself but im still learning Houdini. So much to learn! Like the expression that you used in the wrangle node, i wouldnt even know how to put that together.

im trying to give my particle simulation random size but because Houdini 13 changed the basic structure of POPS and its now in DOPS im having trouble figuring out how to do that. The old way would be using a copy sop but i cant bring that node into DOPS. Really lost here

I was just wondering why my render only takes 15 minutes in MPlay, but when i go to actually render via OUT>Mantra>Render Button it takes an hour and a half. Would it have anything to do with the output file type, like if im doing EXR versus JPEG? Also my explosion is cached too which should help alot, so i thought…
Houdini Lounge » Shader is different than viewport after transfer

I am just wondering why the smoke is so thick compared to the viewport after I've done the transfer under the utilities tab in the pyro shader. Correct me if im wrong but isn't the whole point of hitting the transfer button that the shader takes on what you see in the viewport? Here is a screenshot to show you what i mean and also the HIP file.

Im hoping this is a simple fix, but for some reason when i go to render my pyro smoke its a different color than what i have in the view port. Here are the two pictures to compare and ill also include the HIP file. Any bit of help is greatly appreciated

Ok so i took the time to carefully read through your response. Alot of it was still way over my head. Things like Wedge ROP, Volume SDF (what is sdf) and ect.. im still very new to houdini, so excuse my ignorance literally. I saved your post though, so as i learn what some of the things you mentioned are and do ill revisit and try again

So im trying to create an explosion with a shock wave effect. Ive tried animating the source, but that just makes the smoke stretch and not look good. Also ive tried using particles but the smoke doesnt move fast enough. Im a Houdini Newbie, so please bare with my “stupid” questions….That being said, im asking for how you guys all approach an explosion and more importantly the shock wave effect of it.

Yes a dust shock wave effect is what im trying to achieve. I was thinking id create the motion with particles and then just attach smoke to them. Ive included a few examples this time. There are two files. One is the particles moving equally on all sides of the grid but they are too slow, so i tried to up the velocity settings in the location pops under attributes and the other movie is what i got. Now i understand that by punching in 2,0,3 for example is gonna make the particles move in only the positive 2 and 3 sides of the grid, i guess im asking is there an expression that i can use to make it go on both sides giving the look that its equally spread out. I like how it moves when everything is 0, its just too slow.

So im trying to create an explosion with dust at the bottom spreading out. I wanted to use particles to create the dust effect. My problem is i cant figure out how to make the particles spread out equally along the ground plane at a fast pace once i start editing the velocity. Once i mess with those numbers they only go in one direction. Im very new to Houdini so im sorry if this is a very easy fix.

Thanks for all your help. How exactly do I …
“Use the various fields from the first pyro sim (like vel) to advect your particles then run subsequent sims?”
Is there a tutorial you can send me to?

So im working on creating my first explosion in houdini and i have the initial explosion part down but now im trying to create the dust and debris. I think im going to use particles and then attach smoke to emit from them. Should i make a new container or can/should i use the same one from the initial explosion. Also should i keep it in the same AutoDOP?

Thanks for your feedback. Yeah eventually i was going to add that stuff in, i just wanted to nail the initial explosion first. Do you know of any good tutorials on how to do what you suggested? Sorry im very new to Houdini. Coming over from Maya, everything is so different!
